Assistant Controller, Commercial Real Estate · Edmonton & Calgary

Don't let the title make this opportunity look smaller than it is. If you are looking for more leadership and process work and less day to day and hands-on accounting work, this could be a great position for you.

My client is an enterprising private real estate company with a strong reputation built on integrity, quality and the way it works with people. The Assistant Controller role offers a broad mandate across commercial, multi-family and land operations, with accounting leadership responsibilities spanning property management, asset management and development.

Three Accounting Managers will report to you, each leading their own team of accountants. You will help them deliver accurate, compliant and timely work, while bringing greater consistency to processes across branches. You will also work closely with other department leaders on budgets, reporting, changing needs and the decisions behind the numbers.

If you are an accounting leader or Controller in a smaller commercial real estate organization, this could give you the larger platform and deeper leadership experience you have been looking for. You may also be in another accounting leadership role with a larger firm, ready to broaden your scope. Either way, you will need technical depth, sound judgment and an interest in leading processes and developing people.

THE WORK

• Lead, mentor and champion three Accounting Managers and the teams they oversee.

• Oversee accounting and reporting for property management, development and capital projects, including costs, commitments and budgets.

• Support budgeting and consolidation, year-end CAM audits, internal controls and compliance.

• Work with property, asset and development leaders to understand challenges and provide useful financial insight.

• Improve processes and systems so work is reliable and consistent across branches.

• Partner with the Controller and executive leadership on priorities and special projects.

WHAT YOU BRING

You are a CPA or are working toward your designation, with at least five years of relevant accounting experience in a supervisory/leadership role. You have experience in commercial real estate development, which may include property management, asset management and development (projects), understand accounting across multiple entities, and know the detail and monthly rhythm behind sound reporting. Experience with Yardi or similar software is important.

You also know how to lead in an interdependent business. You listen, are curious, ask good questions and can work through the nuance of a problem with people who see it from different sides. You set clear expectations, coach your managers and bring their teams along when a process needs to change.

WHY THIS IS WORTH A CONVERSATION

My client is progressive and genuinely people-focused. Its team has low turnover and a family-like feel: people know one another, enjoy working together and care about the quality of what they deliver. There is work joy in being part of a capable team where your contribution is seen and your growth is supported.

The role can be based in Edmonton or Calgary. It is office-based, with flexibility in how work is managed. Offer excellent onboarding practices. The comp package includes strong six-figure compensation and a bonus opportunity, parking, RRSP benefits, health benefits from the start of employment and additional perks beyond the usual offering. Continued education is supported, and my client has a clear interest in mentoring and developing future leaders.
